John with his brother Adam
Here's how it all began:
In June 2010, brothers Adam and John Beriault, wanted to do something to support the Alberta Mennonite Central Committee's work with HIV/AIDS. They decided to cycle from LaCrete, Alberta to Coaldale, Alberta, a total of 1450kms to raise awareness and funds for MCC's work with HIV/AIDS. The initiative, Cycle South for AIDS (now called Cycle for Life), not only raised awareness, but also raised a total of $181,000 for MCC!
In November 2010, Mennonite Central Committee Alberta hosted peacemaker Waihenya Njoroge for three weeks promoting the peace and HIV/AIDS work taking place in Kenya. During Waihenya's time in Alberta, he learned about Cycle South for AIDS and wondered if something similar could happen in Kenya.
On April 30th, 2011 after months of planning and collaboration with folks in Kenya, five Canadian cyclists including Canadian speed skating ikon Cindy Klassen, travelled to Kenya to join ten Kenyan cyclists and ten support team members including a videographer to embark on a journey to promote peace and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
The journey in Kenya was followed by another ride that started on June 24th. John and Adam cycled from LaCrete to Edmonton to Coaldale to Sherwood Park in time for the Sherwood Park relief sale, July 8-9, 2011.
